Earlier this week, after showing the first rough cut to a select group from ILM, Lucas decided to show it to Steven Spielberg and Jeff Nathanson, the screenwriter of the former's latest film, the terminal(2004). "Steven saw the rough cut," Lucas says, sitting at home at a table in his kitchen. "I felt I needed to show it to Steven to figure out what the reality was, because we'd earlier had a rough-cut screening for ILM to test the film, and some of the people had strong opinions about things that were contrary to the way I was going. Some people were having a hard time with the reason that Anakin goes bad. Somebody asked whether sombody could kill Anakin's best friend, so that he really gets angry. They wanted a real betrayal, such as,'You tried to kill me so now I'm going to kill you.'They didn't understand the fact that Anakin is simply greedy. There is no revenge. The revenge of the Sith is Palpatine. It doesn't have much to do with Darth Vader; he's a pawn in the whole scheme.

But I had to make a decision, and I decided that I'm not going to alter the film to make it more commercial or marketable. I have to be true to my vision, which is thirty years old, but I have to be true to it."

"The fight itself was fine," Lucas says, "The problem was that the final confrontation between Mace and Palpatine wasn't specific enouth in terms of Anakin, so we're working to make his story, his conflict sharper—I have what I call two sharp 'right turns' in the movie,"he adds, "and they are very hard to deal with. For the audience, it's a real jerk, because you're going along and then somebody yands you in a different direction. Anakin turning to the dark side and killing Mace is a very hard right, because we're dealing with things that aren't so obvious. The audience knows Anakin is going to turn to the dark side, but the things that he's struggling with are so subtle that it may be hard for people to understand why his obsession to hold on to Padme is so strong."

The actors rehearse in their dressing gowns and then adjourn for final costume adjustments, while Lucas and Knoll continue to examine the footage. When Palpatine easily strikes down Mace's three associate Jedi at the outset of the scene, Knoll says, "Look at this—Mace brought the B-team!"

For the moment when Anakin arrives, Lucas explains the situation to Christensen:"You almost come a second too late. You're rushing over to make sure that nothing happens—but your anticipation is that they're going to hurt each other. When the lighting starts, things are getting worse from your point of view. And when Mace is going to kill him, you have to act."

After a couple of takes, Lucas asks Jackson to add a hand gesture that warns Anakin to back off as he prepares to execute the Sith.

Ian McDiarmid is in his Darth Sidious makeup as crew prepare for different angles and sections of the Mace-Palpatine-Anakin showdown. Christensen does his usual push-ups to warm up. He is staying with Nick Gillard in Brighton, so Gillard jokes about writing a book titled, Darth Vader Is Living in My Basement.

Next on the Call Sheet is Anakin in the Jedi Council chamber, brooding on his and Padme's destiny. McCallum listens for a few minutes and then says,"John, I have a great idea. Let's just shoot it and work it out later."

"Showing how much Anakin and Padme care for each other is one of my weak points," Lucas admits,"Expressing that is hard to do. If I had a whole movie, I could probably manage it. But I can't go deep into the psyche of these people beyond a certain stylistic realith I've created for myself. It wouldn't work."

"It's also a very difficult structural issue," he adds, "And when I created it, I knew I wanted two hard right turns—it's designed to be that way—and I knew I was taking a real chance that it wasn't going to work. But you have to see if you can make it work. If it doesn't, well, then I'm going to get skewered for it. But if I can make it work, it'll be neat; it'll be good."
