Vicious predators found in the grasslands of Maridun, mastif phalones resemble well-muscled quadrupeds with turkey-like heads, sharp claws and talons, and a patchy fringe of feathers. They hunt in groups of two or more and use the tall grasses of Maridun's savannahs as cover.

They first appear in "Jedi Crash," an episode of The Clone Wars animated series, stalking the castaway Jedi and clones who have crash-landed on Maridun. Mastif phalone attacks take the life of three hapless clones -- Cameron, Lucky and Flash. While the creatures do attack Rex and Bly, these clones manage to either kill or chase the creatures away with well-aimed blaster shots.

The Lurmen colonists on Maridun are devout pacifists, and are not even willing to inflict harm on these deadly predators. Instead, when corned by a mastif phalone, an agile Lurmen will try to unbalance the creature by tying a rope around its stout legs.
