Small yet terrifying, the glossy black spherical droids hovered aloft on repulsorlift energy. Their sparsely decorated surfaces featured tools of pain, and such fearsome implements as hypodermic needles loaded with truth serums and other powerful drugs. Princess Leia Organa was subjected to a mind probe administered by one of these droids.

The upper half of the IT-O's spherical body is a repainted R2-unit head. The lower half is a lucite hemisphere. The concept of floating spherical droids appeared early in George Lucas' draft scripts from Star Wars, often appearing as armed "seeker" droids.
